Production Editor


 

The Production Editorial department of the Penguin Publishing Group is seeking a self-motivated individual to join its team. The production editor will oversee all aspects of the production cycle for fiction and nonfiction trade and hardcover titles, with subjects ranging from thrillers to literary nonfiction to workbooks and journals.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:


  • Works on and reviews all phases of text from manuscript through blues (copyedits, proofreads, reviews all freelanced work, etc.)
  • Styles manuscripts for design and typesetting
  • Hires and assesses the work of freelance copyeditors, proofreaders, and indexers
  • Reviews and collates authors’ and proofreaders’ edits. This work may include additional copyediting, fact-checking, and following up with queries to the editor/author and notes for the designer.
  • Copyedits and proofreads all stages of cover production, from cover copy to printers’ proofs
  • Reviews promotional and galley-related materials
  • Works in close conjunction with editorial, managing editorial, design, and production to create timelines and troubleshoot project-related concerns and issues
  • Keeps books on schedule and error free under tight deadlines


Essential Qualifications/Requirements:


  • Minimum of three years’ experience in a production editorial environment or equivalent editing and project management experience
  • Excellent copyediting, proofreading, and organizational skills
  • Knowledge of The Chicago Manual of Style
  • Must be able to work and review work electronically using the track changes function in Word and mark-up tools in Adobe Acrobat
  • Ability to prioritize multiple assignments, work well under pressure, and consistently meet tight deadlines while maintaining quality of content
  • Strong communication and writing skills
  • Previous experience working on complex nonfiction books a plus


The salary for this position is $63,000.00. All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to company results.
