The Daniel J. Evans School of Public Policy & Governance is the nation’s #3 ranked school of public policy and

The Evans School has an outstanding opportunity for an Academic and Career Development Programming Manager. This position counsels or advises graduate students regarding career options, academic planning, degree requirements, graduation requirements, readmission requirements, and related matters. In this role, they will also develop and execute career development programming as well as career advising support to current Evans students. The Academic and Career Development Programming Manager will also collaborate with the broader Student Affairs team to provide a holistic student experience.

With the large number of students in our department, the high demand for student appointments for both academic and career advising, we have a need for one additional advisor. The addition of an additional advisor would allow us to allocate duties in a way that would better serve our students as well as the Evans School

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Advise Master of Public Administration (MPA) graduate students on career development concepts and help students identify and secure internships and full-time employment.

  • • Support programmatic and administrative work of Career Development through engaging in- person and virtual career events and communications for students. • Support the management of the online career management system (EvansJobs by Symplicity) through job postings and student/alumni technical support
  • Manage administration of 400-hour professional experience graduation requirement and internship program for the MPA program at Evans

  • Counsel and advise current students on academic planning, including course requirements, school policies and procedures, etc. Inform students about curricular pathways, including program options and specializations, the final degree requirements, and other programming and requirements as relevant.

  • Monitor students’ academic degree progress and audit files for graduating students (through the online Degree Audit Reporting Systems, DARS or Electronic Academic Records System, EARS)


  • Academic Advising (50%)

  • Counsel and advise current students on academic planning, including course requirements, school policies and procedures, etc. Inform students about curricular pathways, including program options and specializations, the final degree requirements, and other programming and requirements as relevant.
  • Monitor students’ academic degree progress and audit files for graduating students (through the online Degree Audit Reporting Systems, DARS or Electronic Academic Records System, EARS)
  • Provide support for students who may benefit from referrals and connections to other campus resources and support structures to promote overall wellness and well-being
  • Collaborate and partner with other campus units to support students.
  • Manage administrative processes for graduation requirement around 400-hour professional experiences (i.e. internships, part-time or full-time employment, research, consulting, etc.) for MPA students
  • Manage and update program information for students and student distribution lists
  • Support programmatic, operational, and advising changes continually centering anti-racism in student services best practices and educational offerings
  • Support, execute, and evaluate the overall production of student affairs programs to continue to build an inclusive community across our programs
  • Partner with Student Services team and other staff in ensuring strong support for student life activities
  • Support the Student Services team with general planning efforts for New Student Orientation and Graduation b assisting with logistics, student communication and attending day-of events

    Career Advising (40%)

  • Provide career development advising to current students on topics including assessing skills and strengths, writing strong resumes/cover letters, searching for internships/jobs, building a network, leveraging LinkedIn, navigating career transitions, refining interview skills, negotiating job offers/salary, and marketing a public administration degree
  • Help students identify and secure graduate-level internships and full-time employment.
  • Empower students to successfully engage in and manage their career growth development
  • Maintain current career resources and strategize with school leadership about new resources when needed
  • Assist with planning and implementing career development events, which may include both virtual and in-person events
  • Present workshops on career building topics including resume writing, interviewing, using LinkedIn, applying for federal jobs, negotiating salary, funding internships, and other topics as needed
  • Support the maintenance of EvansJobs, the school’s online career management system including troubleshooting user issues and supporting school leadership in increasing efficiencies of system

    Activities supporting the mission of the Evans School (10%)

  • Serve and participate on Evans School and University committees as assigned or designated.
  • Support Evans School events and participate fully in a fast-moving team environment where everyone is expected to roll-up their sleeves and contribute whenever possible
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director of Student Affairs or the Assistant Dean of Students

    Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
  • Two years working in higher education, advising, student services, program management

    Additional Requirements:

  • The ability to effectively interact with faculty, staff, students, faculty, community, and industry partners
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and experience working with individuals from different cultural, ethnic, geographic, and experiential backgrounds
  • Well-developed oral and written communication skills
  • Possess ability to make independent decisions, to set priorities, organize time and problem-solve
  • Ability to manage a high volume of varied, detailed tasks simultaneously in a fast paced, deadline driven environment
  • Team-oriented with a collaborative approach to work responsibilities and the desire to interact extensively with colleagues while being flexible and self-motivated.
  • Ability to develop and maintain successful campus partnerships
  • Professional experience in higher education, experience managing academic programs and interacting with industry in a higher education setting


    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except where there are legal requirements such as license/certification/registration.

    Desired Qualifications:

  • Professional experience in higher education, experience managing academic programs and interacting with industry in a higher education setting.
  • Familiarity with UW academic policies and procedures related to academics and curriculum for the undergraduate programs.
  • Thorough working knowledge of Student Databases, MyGrad, Microsoft Office Suite (Access, Excel, PowerPoint, Word)
