Paralegal – Milwaukee Justice Center/Family Courts
Hourly Salary Range – $26.46 – $30.37

Job Summary: This job provides a range of legal and administrative support to the Milwaukee Justice Center (“MJC”) and family courts division. The paralegal reviews documents filed by both attorneys and self-represented litigants in stipulated divorces/legal separations before sending to the Family Division Deputy Court Clerks to schedule a hearing. The paralegal provides information to self-represented litigants on processes such as divorce/legal separation and options for starting and completing a case. Additionally, the position trains MJC volunteers on the forms used, collaborates with the Family Division on processes and procedures to keep clinic supervisors updated on changes, serves as a liaison with family law attorneys to recruit and schedule the Family Marquette Volunteer Legal Clinics, and provides other administrative support as needed under the direction of the MJC Executive Director (Legal Counsel – Clerk of Court).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Review documents in stipulated divorces/legal separations filed by both attorneys and self-represented litigants; identify issues and omissions; communicate feedback with filing parties.
  • Meet with those seeking help at the Milwaukee Justice Center for divorce or legal separation to discuss the process and options available for starting and completing a case.
  • Provide necessary referral information to self-represented litigants.
  • Train volunteers on the family court processes, required forms, and filing instructions, review forms with volunteers for accuracy and completion after clinic supervisor consultation.
  • Serve as a liaison with Family Division clerks and staff regarding filing procedures, updates, and MJC needs.
  • Serve as a liaison with Family Law bar and other groups to assist in volunteer recruitment and schedule for Family Marquette Volunteer Legal Clinics.
  • Maintain and share knowledge of local rules updates and family law changes.
  • Other clinic and administrative duties, as assigned.
Minimum Education & Years of Experience Required: High School Diploma or GED with at least one (1) year of experience with the Milwaukee Justice Center Family Forms clinic, the Milwaukee County Family Court Division, or in a family law related position.

License/Certification: None
