About us

The Temple City Unified School District was established on July 1, 1954. The District maintains four elementary schools, one intermediate school, one high school, and one alternative school. The District employs approximately 308 certificated and 250 classified staff members. Classified employees are all part of the Merit System, under the authority of the Personnel Commission.

The Public Information Officer oversees the TCUSD brand and develops/implements the District’s marketing and communication strategy, as well as develops/maintains/support/designs the official district website and intranet in order to advance the District’s vision and mission of 21st Century Academic Excellence. This position reports directly to the Superintendent and acts as the primary contact for inquiries by the public, media, staff, community, and local agencies, providing the community and district with easily accessible information regarding schools, programs, and services, while maintaining proprietary and confidential information, both oral and written, to assure the security of such data. The Public Information Officer is responsible for the ongoing management and growth of TCUSD’s online presence, including all new and existing social media currently aligned with our core values.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop a comprehensive marketing and communication plan that positions TCUSD as an innovative district, committed to academic excellence and 21st century student preparedness. This includes developing message strategy, creating impactful promotions and advertising, media relations, and communication to District Personnel and other key audiences in an effort to promote District services, programs, achievement, and image;
  • Implement the marketing and communication plan utilizing a breadth of conventional, social, and emerging media to communicate effectively with target audiences, including the TCUSD Board, employees, students, parents, news media, peer and professional organizations, various stakeholder groups, and the community at large;
  • Develop valuable information sources and networks through collaborative relationships across the District and in the community to foster effective communication and goodwill overall that benefits the District;
  • Manage crisis communication during crisis situations and emergencies at the District and school sites;
  • Plan and manage the budget as it relates to advertising, promotions, publicity, website management, and public outreach activities;
  • Address and expedite responses to inquiries and concerns received from citizens, news media, and school personnel;
  • Support school sites and district departments with communication, editorial, and public relations consultation (i.e., brochures, newsletters, information bulletins);
  • Serve as District spokesperson and train school administrators to conduct on-air interviews, especially during emergency situations;
  • Maintain current knowledge of emerging technologies and social media trends;
  • Create and design high-quality major publications, including photographs and interviews, promotional and marketing materials, and comprehensive web pages/sites;
  • Execute additional duties as assigned by the Superintendent.
  • Oversee the ongoing development and maintenance of the District’s website and other online media;
  • Provide web-based programming maintenance;
  • Monitor District internet programming and presentations;
  • Manage social media public relations, as well as day-to-day social media activities;
  • Manage social media design consistency;
  • Employs the latest techniques and web design “best practices,” including website accessibility, search engine optimization, and cross-browser compatibility, in the development and maintenance of District and site websites;
  • Shares and promotes relevant, positive, appropriate content from local media and social media affiliates;
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

Knowledge of:

  • Marketing and branding strategies;
  • Principles and practices of media relations and public relations;
  • Principles and practices of school and community relations;
  • Principles and techniques of graphic design and publication planning;
  • Principles and practices of photography and video production;
  • Web design standards and principles;
  • Graphic design and website design and maintenance;
  • Technical principles of web page publishing and social media authoring (including new and emerging platforms);
  • Operation of a computer, digital camera, and other specialized software utilized for print and web publications;
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy;
  • Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary;
  • Technical principals of web page publishing and social media authoring.

Ability to:

  • Manage multiple projects and competing priorities;

  • Maintain confidentiality;
  • Create web materials demonstrating strong graphic design skills;
  • Set and maintain records and files;
  • Write grammatically correct routine business correspondence such as letters or memoranda;
  • Demonstrate strong creative, strategic, analytical, organizational, and interpersonal relations skills;
  • Write and edit for various audiences;
  • Speak on a one-to-one basis using appropriate vocabulary and grammar to obtain or give information or explain policies and procedures;
  • Prepare press releases and editorials, and secure media placements;
  • Work with a wide variety of personalities and situations with tact, good judgment, and poise;
  • Develop content across the web, intranet, and social channels;
  • Remain abreast of new and emerging technologies, applications, and platforms;
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, public relations, journalism, or related field.

Experience: Three years (3) work experience in public relations, marketing, or related field.

Licenses, Certifications, and other requirements:

  • Valid California Class C driver’s license.
  • Proof of current and valid Tuberculosis screening.

Pay: $6,958.00 - $8,461.00 per month
